​PTO Board Meeting Minutes

Date:  August 28, 2017
Time:  6:00 PM
Location:  Brighten Academy

The meeting was called to order by Keena Kister, PTO President at approximately 6:00.  She gave opening remarks, welcomed everybody to the meeting, and thanked them for coming.  
**May meeting minutes (from previous school year) were approved.      

Budget Update:  
**Parents were made aware of big budget items to be on the lookout for this year: spirit nights, spirit shirts, Color Fun Run (coming up in April - more info TBA), Oktoberfest, Mistletoe Market, Variety Show.
**PTO gave back approx $25,000 to the school last year.  Some of the things the money went towards was the fence around the playground, new sod, repainting inside, hand dryers in the bathroom, awning over the office door, and bleachers for the gym.  
**$150/year is allotted for each grade level, and $100/year is allotted for each special.  The money comes from the PTO.

 Upcoming Events:
**The first Spirit Night of the year will be held at Pelican’s Snoballs on August 31st from 3:00-9:00.
**The next Spirit Night will actually be more of a “Spirit Week” at Carrabba’s the week of September 18th-22nd.  This will coordinate with Spirit Week (see below).
**With any of the Spirit Nights throughout the year, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO MENTION YOU ARE FROM BRIGHTEN!
**Spirit Shirts - Ordering is happening now and will end Friday, September 1st.  Online ordering is available on PTO website.  Order forms also went home in binders as well.

**Spirit Week - The theme this year will be “Travel Around the World” with each day of the week emphasizing a different continent(s).  Spirit week will wrap up Friday with movie night on September 22nd.  The movie is TBA.  
Monday - Asia
Tuesday - Europe/Africa
Wednesday - South America
Thursday - Australia/Antarctica
Friday - North America


Community Partners
*Box Tops - Parents were encouraged to send them in to the school.
*Shoparoo App - Parents were encouraged to continue using this phone app to help raise money for the school.  
 *Amazon Smile - Parents were encouraged to link Brighten Academy with their Amazon account so a small portion of their purchase amount will be given back to Brighten.  

Membership
**We are currently at 304 members, and we want to see this number increase!!


New Business
**Birdies Fore Brighten - Parents were asked to stay tuned for further info on this event.
**Parents were encouraged to continue to attend each PTO meeting.  1 volunteer credit hour will be given for each meeting attended. 
**Updated By-Laws were discussed and voted on during the meeting.  Revisions that were made are as follows:
-updated to remove “paperform” reference to include computerized 
documents
-added the position of “Membership” to the PTO Board
